I’m teaching myself how to braze...

Kinja'd!!!

You have to start with good foundations. These are each made of two pieces of 3/8" copper pipe opened up, flattened out and then one was drilled for the 1/2" leg and then flanged to give the brazing something to grip to. The other one was brazed on afterwards...

Kinja'd!!!

Next trick is to attach you feet to your handle. Two rookie errors here. First is that I cleaned up the feet. Second is that my template is 8mm plywood. Brazing involves heat so not only did the feet get cooked but there was also some smoke and fire associated with the template...

Kinja'd!!!

With enough heat...and the torch I had was at its limit... attachment is attainable. Pretty attachment? No. For pretty, one needs files and grinders and sanders if one does not have enough heat.

Kinja'd!!!

To close in the ends of the pipe...I used some really not very carefully stripped single core electrical wire which was curled around itself and nearly melted before being soaked in molten Silspec and suddenly it does what you want. How does that happen?

Kinja'd!!!

Sanded. Drilled. Mounted to a door. Success!

Yep...right at the limit of the torch I reckon. I do have a oxy acetylene torch but not enough of a reason yet to invest in bottles.

the other thing those map torches are good for is starting wood burner fires at our cabin. They are sweet!

Wow! Oppo introduces me to crap I’d never get to know about on any other car forum. I gotta look into this more.

“These are each made of two pieces of 3/8" copper pipe opened up, flattened out”

Those round flanges were originally copper pipe? I am not at all clear on the ‘opening up and flattening’ part resulting in the round flanges.

I like that industrial aesthetic. Are you going to clear coat it or let it age to the verdigris look?

I cut a 2" length of the 3/8" pipe used in the handle. Then split it lengthways with the angle grinder. A couple of pliers are then used to open the pipe up before bashing it fully flat with a dead blow hammer. Then used a compass to mark a 40mm circle on the flattened piece which I cut out using tin snips...repeat 4 times and they were my feet.

The handle will be allowed to naturally patina...just like the rest of us!

Perfection isn’t actually a useful measure of   quality in my book. It’s more of an aesthetic taste or a state of mind. My  skills are more tradesperson than craftsperson at the best of times and I’m too impatient to invest too much into perfection .

As it is...there was about six hours of t ime in this.

ah, got it, thanks. Clever.

I like that look. And less maintenance. hmm... may have to look into getting myself clear coated .
